High School Syllabus (1.0 credits in history/social studies)

Lecture Component Kenneth Harl, Barbarian Empires of the Steppes and Era of the Crusades

(NB, I hate the title Barbarian Empires, so we just call it Empires of the Steppes.)  I recommend a video version of the class (DVD or digital download) because it would be much harder to follow without the map visuals.

First Semester

Watch Harl, Empires of the Steppes, lectures #1-22 (up to about 1000 CE)

Writing Assignments

Daily: Take notes on the lectures in Cornell style, with a 1/4 page summary of each lecture

Document Based Question (take home exam) on excerpt from Herodotus on the Scythians (Documents in World History, vol. 1)

Essay #1 Nomadic Exchange: compare (that means contrast, too!) two different nomadic/sedentary exchanges from the ones discussed in the first 22 lectures of Empires of the Steppes.

Essay #2 or Blue Book Exam: TBA

Second Semester
